Open source software is usually better than closed source (people who write things because they want to don’t like their names associated with crap – people who write things for the company write anything that works, as long as it’s ready to ship by the deadline date), and there can’t be any hidden code in it (like viruses, back doors, etc.) It’s also usually more secure. (Sure the hackers can see how to break into it – that’s why the open source community has come up with security that doesn’t weaken if you see the source.)
