The best GNU/Linux distro for me?

I am getting tired of Ubuntu, and I want to make a switch. I am pretty experienced with Linux in general, but I’m not one to spend hours upon hours just configuring things. So, what I’m looking for in a distro is something that works, but allows me to configure it the way I see fit.

Any suggestions?

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon the outstanding Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

I run Linux Mint 6 (LiveDVD) Linux Mint 7 and Linux Mint 8 all are heavily customized using alternative repositories or custom compiled debian packages. The possibilties as with most Linux distros. are endless

if you like the debain packaging system then you could try debian or another debian based distro like mint, …
or you could try fedora/redhat, or maybe opensuse, gentoo or one of the other million of distros out there
i’d suggest you try it out in a virtual machine (virtualbox) first, so you can see if it fits your needs.

I agree with mata go for Opensuse or Fedora but why not try a paid linux u really get your money’s worth like SLED or Mandriva Power Pack, if u had Ubuntu and liked it but want to switch and NOT spending hours configuring things and stick to free linux then your options are quite limited
