Long time back we used to write stuff up in C and C++

I have been out of programming since just after punched cards so I was wondering what language is used to write most Windows based programs these days?

What is the best software for windows programming?

I am looking for the best programming language/toolkit combination for windows GUI programming. The applications would be educational programs displaying text, graphics, sounds and perhaps video files while monitoring student inputs to determing progress and when additional help is needed. Free and/or open source software is prefered, but commercial tools are an option as well. Speed of development and ease of learning the tools are considerations. Thanks!

What Linux distro to download for maximum Windows software compatibility and feel?

Hello all. I’m a Windows user, but I’d like to try out a Linux distro. I’m looking for an OS that has a similar GUI to windows and similar applications, with high compatibility with Windows programs. I was thinking of Ubuntu. Do you guys have any better suggestions? Thanks.
