what does the g in gnu stand for?
"gnu is not unix" is a parital answer. It answers the N and the U in the recursive acronym GNU. Where does the G originate?
In other words why is it not an F or an R or any other letter?
Not Unix explains the N and the U
Ive read the entire Wikipedia entry on recursive acronyms and the entry on GNU. They explain everything about the N and the U but no one can tell me why the recursive acronym STARTS with a G.
JJ thats an answer. Thats all I wanted to know. Why didnt someone just say that?
What is the history of the GNU utilities/command "info" and "dir"?
I’m trying to determine the origin of the GNU utilities/commands "info" and "dir". Meaning, are they descendants of Unix commands? Did the GNU foundation create these tools? How long have they been standard tools in Linux? Are they commonly used on newer Unix systems?
I’ve been poking around http://www.gnu.org/software/texinfo/ and http://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/ for information, but they aren’t really answering the questions.
And as for coreutils, I assume that "dir" used to be a part of "fileutils", but I cannot find any historical information on the GNU website related to this package set, other than it was incorporated into coreutils.
katalin: thanks, I already tried expected google searches.. too many things match "dir" and "info".

Legal Strings Remain in Novell-SCO Group Tussle over Unix
There are still some dangling legal strings that need to be trimmed, and those won’t happen for at least a few weeks — barring any more appeals, of course, by the Lindon, Utah-based SCO Group. One of them involves counterclaims by IBM and Red Hat.
– Although open source advocates around the world celebrated a court victory March 30 when a Salt Lake City jury confirmed that the licensing rights to the Unix operating system belong to Novell and not to the SCO Group, the nearly seven-year-old legal dispute over IP is not yet over.

How does Open Source Software Business model work?
How do the developers get paid if nobody buys the software, just get it free, and that too with source code? I can understand it about amateur software developers. But I recently heard that Sun is coming out with Open Source Unix this year. How will they profit from this? If not, how will they survive?
Jury Decision Confirms Novell’s Ownership of Unix
In its lawsuits, SCO Group, which has been in bankruptcy for several years, had been seeking about $251 million in Unix license fees plus unspecified damages. SCO Group’s ultimate goal was to gain control over the open-source Linux operating system, which is based in part on the original Unix code created at AT T’s Bell Laboratories in the early 1970s.
– In an IP copyright case that stretches back to 2004, a jury in Salt Lake City ruled March 30 that networking and middleware software maker Novell legally retains ownership rights to the Unix enterprise operating system, defeating a stubborn legal challenge from The SCO Group of Lindon, Utah.

Oracle Explains Unclear Message About OpenSolaris
A posting on the company Web site implied that OpenSolaris may soon be end-of-lifed. However, there’s no need for app developers and IT managers to worry: Oracle says it is not killing off the freely down-loadable community version of Sun’s Unix-based Solaris enterprise operating system anytime soon.
– Was a posting on the Oracle Web site published Feb. 24 entitled quot;End of Service Life Status for OpenSolaris Operating System quot; simply unclear on the concept, or was it a hint that Oracle is planning to drop the Sun Microsystems-developed open source operating system entirely?
