What IS Linux anyways?
Okay, I’ve looked around, but can’t find a proper answer from Linux users. They tell me that it’s a "GNU Unix Linux Operating system with customizable" blah blah blah.

I’m tired of reading questions about which hero would win in a fight. I just want to know if they were alive today which Operating System would each of these heroes use.

Tarzan seems like a Mac User to me, while Doc Savage sounds like an unreconstructed mainframer.

In terms of Linux, what makes things like Red Hat cost money and things like Ubuntu not? Is pay-for OS based on Linux better quality than freely distributed OS? What is the best choice for Linux-or-Unix OS for a budding programmer?
If Unix and Linux are open source, who controls the submissions for improvements?
Is there a governing body that accepts changes and distributes them to the masses or does Open Source simply mean that you can make all the changes you want on your own system without violating license agreements?
How different is a Linux network compared to a Unix network?
How different is a Linux network compared to a Unix network? I understand a Unix network has mainframes, etc.
What are the things a Unix network has but a Linux network does not have and can never have?
