I am incorporating an business that will have a lot to do with backend stuff like php/mysql. I have enough experience to make the page look pretty and enough to do basic forms, but I need someone with additional php knowledge for more advanced applications. If I am just beginning this venture, what would you recommend I exchange for a person to be my "head webmaster" of sorts? A % of profit, stock….? Keep in mind that I am low on capital.

I want a navigation code for myspace. I want to hide my home and all of that stuff, I know how to do that I just need to know how to get like the word home and message and comment so they can just click on that! Whats the code for that?

Ok so I’m a pretty decent programmer. I know C and C++. I used to know Visual Basic a long time ago. I have no official experience though.

I want to get a job as a programmer, but I’ve been looking on Monster.com and each one of them wants somebody with experience, without exception.

Also, it seems like they want somebody familiar with ASP and .NET and I don’t know much about that stuff.

How can I get my foot in the door?

I am trying to update my programming/software engineering skills to better suit the current environment. I have had two introductory classes, which were mainly focused on Java and C. I know the basics of programming in these languages, and I know what data structures are (stacks, queues, trees, etc.). However, I am having trouble with setting up the GNU development tools such as make and gdb, as well as with the concept of a makefile, since we were never taught about this. I’m also trying to understand this software engineering/lifecycle stuff, and how it can fit into the design of software.

Would there be a tutorial website that would help with these concepts along with the more advanced concepts in software development? Thanks!

I wanted to reinstall windows and I dont want to lose all the data stored in firefox. And i wont remember most of them.

I have been a programmer using COBOL for about 4 years now. I really hated it and still do, but my biggest fault was NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT! I really like programming, and would love to continue, but not in COBOL.

I think the only upside in my case is I have also been working on Java, although not as much, for about 3 years. But most of my time I had to use COBOL. Now, if I quit and start looking for a new job, my resume would still have COBOL and I will most probably be interviewed for the same kind of jobs, right? I am really interested in web development, and try and do something in that area in my personal time.

In other words, how do I tell my future employer "Hey, I have 4 years of COBOL experience, but I just want to throw that away and start over. Please give me a job."?

Thanks for the replies guys. I know Java pretty well. I know PHP/HTML/Javascript/AJAX and all that jazz. I have my own personal PR4 website. I write programs for fun. I contribute to open source whenever I can. But since I graduated, I have been working with the same company for 4 years, and have no idea about how the job market is out there. Hell yeah, I can prove I know my stuff. But I have no *OFFICIAL, REAL WORLD* experience! For instance, I can’t say ‘I have solved the such-and-such problem in our intranet website’ or ‘I have a portfolio of clients I have made websites for’. I don’t even know if it really matters, mainly because I have never tried taking an interview or even applying for a job until now.

I have a Mac and use the latest version of Firefox. I want the download window to stop popping up every time i save like a picture or something. For instance when i save a picture i see in firefox, the download window pops up saying what i’ve downloaded and stuff. How do i get that pop up window to stop popping up everytime i save something to my computer (like a picture) in Firefox? I can’t find anything in preferences in firefox either. PLEASE HELP!

I’m planning to install the Ubuntu OS on my laptop(currently has windows Vista), but I don’t know if Ubuntu is good. Do you need to install any drivers for Ubuntu? Can I send stuff to my printer in Ubuntu? Is it compatible with my printer driver?

I need a labtop with the stuff I wil lneed while i become a game designer and programmer. Please you list links of computers you think would be helpful (cost 1300 or less).

I know that they’ve got different ideologies, but what is the essential difference? I think that Open Source can be a bit more restrictive (e.g. you can keep derivatives of your work from being sold), is that true? Are there any other, more general differnces?
I don’t mean ‘free’ as in ‘free beer’ or something. I’m talking about free software, based on the principles of freedom and stuff.
