I was basically wondering what it took to become a senior programmer (so many years work experience with a particular company, so many years work experience total, a type of certification, etc.). Also, is that the highest status/job title you can attain in the programming field?

I am a sophomore computer science major currently hoping to find a job in programming when I get out of school. I know that, these days, a simple degree will likely not be sufficient to find a steady job, and that I probably ought to graduate with internships and certifications completed. Does anyone have suggestions as to which certifications would be most helpful and would look best on a resume? Also, in which order should I attempt to master these languages? My school’s program has started us in Java.

I have learned a great deal of Java programming on my own after quite some time now. I figured that if I keep this up for 6 months or so I would be competent enough to work as a programmer just like the IT degree holders.

Is there a way I can get certified as a programmer and find a job as one?
