Used GNU/linux at home and never looked back at windows or MAC?

For example, Ubuntu needs a program called Wine to install Windows-based software. So is there another Linux OS that can install them right away? And if so, whats the lowest Linux OS memory usage?

I have a few linux questions. When I’m on a terminal, what do I type to figure out the operating system?

Secondly, what do I type to determine how many bits (32-bit or 64-bit) are the computer?

I just bought a used laptop and I am used to the XP home operating system. How do I go about connecting to my modem or a wireless network using the Ubuntu Linux operating system? Usually there is a connect to menu. I am unable to find this equivalent on Linux.

I’m totally lost here. I am reading a book on php and it says about installing it on windows. I thought php is something that is installed on the web server and not your operating system. What is this for? I am a little confused here.
