A friend of mine operates a story-in-installments kind of Play by E-mail game, but their getting tired of people not wanting to join because of it being on Yahoo! Groups. Could anyone suggest an open source platform that could allow similar functions to Yahoo! Groups but could be hosted on a simple host server with PHP, MySQL, and such?

Thinking of designing a model and photographer site, where members have photo portfolio’s; thats member-based, and community oriented. What would be the best open source software solution for such a project?
