Is it possible to put linux on an old computer that when it turns on, it doesn't start up?

I have an old computer that when i try to start it up, the screen is just blue. It used to run windows 99. Would I be able to put a version of linux on it. If so, what steps would I have to take. I was thinking ubuntu but I am an open (source) guy. Desperate try for a joke.

where can i get linux os and how do i install it on an old computer?

I’m on a quest to learn about computers. I’ve decided to take an old computer that has xp pro on it and try my hand at gnu or linux (don’t know which one because I don’t know the difference between them). Anyway, I think my first step is to obtain the software. If that’s not the first step please tell me what i need to do first. Don’t tell me not to do this– I’m going ahead even if my brain will explode! ;-)

How do I transfer all my data from my old computer to a new one with a different OS?

I bought a new desktop and am using a custom OS on it, now I need to tranfer all my data from my old computer but still keep my new OS. Anyway to make this happen? Is there a link or program?

How do you install a second OS on the same hard drive?

There is an old computer which I want to install WinXP on it, while retaining its Win98. I want the two OS to be completely separate from each other and each runs its own installed applications, and has absolutely nothing to do with each other.

The hard drive now is partitioned into C and D, C being the Win98 OS and installed programs, while D is personal data. Should I install XP in C or D partition? Or should I create a new partition within C or D (let’s call it E), this way if either OS screws up, I can restore only that partition using TrueImage or something similar?

Also how much space do I need to install XP?

Is the verification code for Office 2007 saved to my computer?

I have Office 2007 on my old computer and I want to put it on my new laptop. I have the back up disk, but it’s telling me to enter the verification code. I have no idea what it is. Is the verification code in my old computer?

What is the best version of Linux for me?

I have an old computer and I want to put Linux on it. I know that most versions of Linux come with a bunch of programs and that makes it take longer to download/install. I would like a fast booting version of Linux that comes with a web browser and maybe an email client. There could be a few extra programs, but the LESS the BETTER!

How do you boot up a computer directly to a game emulator without the os loading up and without a disc boot?

I was thinking that there may be a linux os that does this, but I can’t seem to find any. I want to have my old computer play game emulators like NES and SNES, Sega, and Game Boy, without having an entire os boot up. I want it to boot up like an arcade game that has all different games on it. If you could give me a link or point in the right direction, then I would be very grateful. Thanks!

How do i get a linux operating system?

I have to clear everything off a computer, including the OS. How do I go about wiping the HD, and starting over from scratch?
I mean, all the way down to the core, where just the MOBO is running the show.
