What is the best way to install Linux Ubuntu?
I am looking to install Linux on my laptop (Dell Inspiron E1705). During installation I was asked if I wanted to install it under Windows or as a stand alone. I have partitioned my hard drive so the installation as a standalone is no problem, but this is my first time attempting to work with Linux. .
Are there any other issues I might have to face, and if so what is the best way to deal with them???
Thanks in advance.
What is the best way to back up files if I want to access them with linux running laptop later?
I have an old laptop that will die soon- it is running xp. I want to back up my mp3/photos/word/ppt documents. I may need the applications if my old laptop is still usable, but I really just want to be able to transfer my photos/mp3 etc files to the new laptop running linux. What is the best way to do this? I was thinking portable external HD, but how to do this?
Should I buy MacBook Pro or Open Source GNU/Linux-BSD Laptop for College?
This question has been on my mind all summer long. As I prepare for class in the fall I have been searching the interw3bs for a new laptop. This reason for wanting one is I have been using a eMac running Fedora 8-12 and I love it, but I think it is time to move on to something more portable. My three biggest concerns with buying a new notebook are in this order
Functionality (Programs "just work". and Program compatibility)(GPU, CPU,ect.)
Battery Life (7 hours or better —–> would be nice if i can get that performance on GNU?Linux)
Aesthetics (Oooooooo Shiny)
I am going to college to become an engineer. I don’t know which field of engineering but I know I want to build a better future for my home town and small villages in the 3rd world. The software I use now is all open source but don’t know if I can get away with using it in a college environment where AutoDesk and Adobe are king.
Thoughts
Thank You in advanced.

I don’t mind Apple’s closed system when it comes to iTunes and all that I have ways around that. But, they are showing great interest in F/OSS. Even if I run Windows ( another closed system) i still have to pay for the software. Might as well go closed source with open source benefits.
How can I require a flash drive configuration file to start up Linux?
I saw one time where someone booted Linux on their laptop, but it WOULD NOT boot without the flash drive containing a particular configuration file inserted. Basically, the file/flash drive gave Linux the "OK" to continue booting.
How do I create this situation with my computer? I use Knoppix 6.2.
