Don’t confuse the marketing definition of operating system with the technical definition. The Linux kernel by itself is an operating system.
I love all the GNU software, but they are just applications. Not the operating system.
X is just as important, if not more important, to a Linux installation. So maybe we should call it GNU/X/Linux.
But what about all of the other contributions?
Maybe we should call it GNU/X/Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird/Openoffice.org/GIMP/Wine/Compiz/Pidgin/KDE/Linux?
What is your position on Microsoft's contribution of 20klines of code to the Linux Kernel and 3 Linux drivers?
As Microsoft begins its slow migration to the integration of open-source software into it’s system, amazing things have happened. Most recently, Microsoft released 20,000 lines of code as a contribution to the linux Kernel which include 3 linux-based device drivers, all in the hopes of enabling Linux/Unix distros to be virtualized into programs such as Hyper-V for cross platform integration.
What is your opinion on this? Do you like it or not, and why?
This may sound silly but, what actually is DOS? I understand Windows and can work on GNU/Linux…?
but I was never able to understand what actually is DOS?
Is it an OS just like Windows and the OS’es based on Linux kernel?
