I want to install Linux on my old laptop, and it only has an external floppy drive. Where can I find the floppy image, and instructions on how to install it? Thanks.

I installed OpenSuse Linux 11.1 on my hard drive, and the installer set aside a large chunk of the hard drive for windows. After installing linux and restarting, windows was no longer a boot option (under grub). Also, the partition for windows was no longer readable. I tried to recover the data using data recovery software without any luck. From another windows machine the recovery software says that it cannot read the data.

For example, Ubuntu needs a program called Wine to install Windows-based software. So is there another Linux OS that can install them right away? And if so, whats the lowest Linux OS memory usage?

I would like to install Gentoo GNU/Linux. How do you install it? I am using a Dell computer and Windows XP. I heard Gentoo is much better for a lot of things.

I’m on a quest to learn about computers. I’ve decided to take an old computer that has xp pro on it and try my hand at gnu or linux (don’t know which one because I don’t know the difference between them). Anyway, I think my first step is to obtain the software. If that’s not the first step please tell me what i need to do first. Don’t tell me not to do this– I’m going ahead even if my brain will explode!

I have a HP 2133 mini laptop that has a SUSE Linux 10 operating system. I can download programs in Linux but not install. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I’m trying to decide which distribution of linux to install. I want a version with which i can record music, edit pictures, etc… Or am i completely misunderstanding how the linux distributions work? Each one has different programs already installed and do different things… right?

I want a Linux distribution to install to my 8gb flash drive that is light on system resources. (I will be running it on older computers and speed is a must.)

I don’t want something like Puppy Linux because you are always running as root and I’m concerned with security. No DSL either. I have had graphics problems with that one on some of my computers.

I am running Fedora 7 on 1 computer and Fedora 10 on another.
I am new to Linux so any advice is welcome

I originally had Windows 7, then due to a registry error, it messed up and wouldn’t boot again. I used the Mandriva Linux install disc to format the hard drive but now when I boot the computer with the Windows 7 install disc, it does not acknowledge the disc (even though it is set to read the disc from the BIOS). It simply continues straight to the Linux OS. It is not a disc issue either as I have back-ups.
