I want to learn computer programming. What are good sites/books/etc. to check out in order to start?

I am currently going to school online with the university of phoenix to get my degree in information technology. I have not chosen my focus yet. I wanted to choose a focus in programming but some of the smartest people I know said they couldn’t even understand it. How hard is it? My choices right now are web design, programming, and networking.

I want to learn computer programming on my own and eventually get a job without a degree. I’m not able to attend college right now. So that’s the reason. I basically want to be a freelance programmer.

I also want to try and get as many certifications I can. Any advice?
I know C C++ is what I really need to learn
Oh yeah where do I get the certifications? Through college?

I’m only sixteen, but I’m very interested in computer programming and application developing for Mac computers. I’m wondering if there are any good books out there that will help me learn how to go about the basic process and learn the coding if not even further. Thanks in advance.

Also! Any good books on repairing computers? that would also be a great help.

I know some programming languages, but I want to know what is the best language to learn NOW. What is the best programming language to write applications that are under demand in the current market and in the future?
Is Qt (c++) a good idea? It is not just a UI library, it is a whole programming framework.

Hi,

I know C/C++ and Java and was interested into taking the next step into graphics programming, which I assume is learning an API.

I’d like, if possible, an API that’s both easy to learn and representative of those used in the industry (for example, if I know it then I should "easily" grasp the others).

I also would like to start off with 2D graphics and then move on to 3D.

Any resources and help is most welcome.

I am a newbie in programming and I am starting with Actionscript 3 the full OOP not the AS2 and I am struggling big time. Should I learn the basics of a real language like Java first? Then try AS3?
How many hours would you recommend me to study per day?

I am interested in moving into the C programming languages. At first, I tried to learn C# but for a beginner with almost no programming experience, I failed quickly. I need something that is easy to learn and can make things like Cell Phone apps and Flash games.
