What’s the best programming language to begin learning?

I’m interested in finally learning a programming language but I don’t know which one to start with. I’ve been reading about C++ the last few days since I know it’s a popular one, but is it the best? All of my lame newbie software is just text in a black box. Is it going to get better as I learn more, or am I going the wrong route and should switch languages?

What do you suspect is more difficult, programming an iPhone application or a website like Facebook?

I’m starting a project. I’m wondering whether those who are knowledgeable about the subject matter would say that programming a website with user-submitted content would be more difficult than programming an iPhone application or two? Including the difficulty in learning the various languages and programs involved.

I realize this is a pretty subjective question, just looking for some insight from the general population. Thanks for your time!

Where is a good tutorial website to learn programming/software engineering if you've had intro classes?

I am trying to update my programming/software engineering skills to better suit the current environment. I have had two introductory classes, which were mainly focused on Java and C. I know the basics of programming in these languages, and I know what data structures are (stacks, queues, trees, etc.). However, I am having trouble with setting up the GNU development tools such as make and gdb, as well as with the concept of a makefile, since we were never taught about this. I’m also trying to understand this software engineering/lifecycle stuff, and how it can fit into the design of software.

Would there be a tutorial website that would help with these concepts along with the more advanced concepts in software development? Thanks!
