I am searching for a good book to start with my programming skill, what would you suggest?

I am currently going to school online with the university of phoenix to get my degree in information technology. I have not chosen my focus yet. I wanted to choose a focus in programming but some of the smartest people I know said they couldn’t even understand it. How hard is it? My choices right now are web design, programming, and networking.

I have a working knowledge of VBScript, Visual Basic, C++, some Java, and other programming languages, but I am having trouble finding a way to challenge myself without having a job that allows me to use my skills. Any suggestions as to what I should do?

Does anyone know the latest book and well probably the best or most effective one to learn java programming? more likely a 2009 edition..thanks.

I want to learn client-server programming also and which softwares do i require for creating a connection etc….It would be great if you can provide some information of client-server programming…..I mean about different severs also like apache tomcat etc………

What is the best book to learn java programming?

I want a beginners book in java programming, I know very little as I did a short course in school.

I know visual basic programming and a few other programming languages already, and now want to learn java programming.

If you know any good books that learn java easily please post them here, thanks

OK for example I got Sams’ Teach Yourself Java Programming in 24 Hours and that was a nice little primer. I will not say where I got it from but it may or may not have been a torrent site. Can anyone recommend any particular books (for any language) that are good, OR any websites where I can teach myself? Thanks.
