How to install Linux on a cleaned computer?

Alright, so I’ve gotten my hands on an older desktop and the previous user reformatted the hard drive. Therefore, there is no operating system at all! I want to install Linux onto this system but how do I do that? I heard something about installing Linux onto a thumb drive and having the BIOS boot with the thumb drive and it will install Linux? Could someone please help!

How to recover MS Windows data after Linux install corrupted windows partition?

I installed OpenSuse Linux 11.1 on my hard drive, and the installer set aside a large chunk of the hard drive for windows. After installing linux and restarting, windows was no longer a boot option (under grub). Also, the partition for windows was no longer readable. I tried to recover the data using data recovery software without any luck. From another windows machine the recovery software says that it cannot read the data.

What is a good open-source movie editor that works on a mac?

I want to do "advanced" edits, like moving a jpeg image or even a video around the screen, on my mac. I want it open-source so I can look at how it works, and I want to spend as little money as possible on it. Any suggestions other than installing Linux on my mac(which is actually a family mac)?

What GNU/Linux Distribution is best for me?

Im going to be installing linux alongside Vista in an attempt to move away from the wormhole that is windows, an just to try and live without some windows products i actually enjoy. But i have a problem… i do not know what distribution to get. I understand that they are all roughly the same with some tweaks, but i can find a good enough comparison of the main ones like ubuntu and fedora. I want the one that is most malleable to what im doing and what i want, such as the ability to change interfaces and stuff. I am a web programmer, and i also make animations on flash ( i may have to use windows for that) i do like my games, but i know i can just play them on windows. i know its hard understanding what i want but thank you for at last reading and please answer i wan to know! :D thanks

What is the easiest Linux version to install and use for a newbie?

Hello.

I have never installed nor used Linux before.
I heard it’s better than Windows and i have a spare old laptop which is broken now.

Now i thought about installing Linux on it. But since i never used Linux before, i need a version which is easy to install and use for a newb like me.

And i have also a few questions about it:
Can i still play Java games such as RuneScape?
Can i still browse the web like on Windows?

Thanks in advance!
My laptop specifications are:

around 186 mb ram
around 560 mhz processor speed
and 5 gb diskspace
