Alright, so I’ve gotten my hands on an older desktop and the previous user reformatted the hard drive. Therefore, there is no operating system at all! I want to install Linux onto this system but how do I do that? I heard something about installing Linux onto a thumb drive and having the BIOS boot with the thumb drive and it will install Linux? Could someone please help!

I once had a 1-CD Linux distribution. I could boot from the CD and run the OS without installing it on the hard drive. It is very useful when you want to do some experiments in Linux but don’t want to mess up with all the (Windows) stuff on the hard drive. I forgot the name of the distribution. Can anybody tell me? Is there a GNU-licensed piece of software like freeraser, except that instead of specializing in overwriting to the point of non-recovery the data of a specific file, it overwrites to the point of non-recovery the entire free space of the hard drive, or a specific portion of the hard drive to avoid potential conflicts with constant reading and writing of data?

I downloaded OpenSuse 11.1 onto my hard drive using Unetbootin but I’ve decided I want to remove it and try a different distribution. I thought I could take it off by uninstalling unetbootin because this worked with previous installs but for some reason OpenSuse remains on my hard drive and I can’t install any other Linux version now. How do I get OpenSuse off of my hard drive?

I have a laptop running on Vista, and the hard drive got currupted, is there a program, someone told me about that is Linux based, to recover files from the hard drive?

I installed OpenSuse Linux 11.1 on my hard drive, and the installer set aside a large chunk of the hard drive for windows. After installing linux and restarting, windows was no longer a boot option (under grub). Also, the partition for windows was no longer readable. I tried to recover the data using data recovery software without any luck. From another windows machine the recovery software says that it cannot read the data.

I am currently trying to download the operating system Gnu so that I can run the program ddrescue to attempt to recover some files on a hard drive with a few bad sectors. I’ve gone to the sites where I am supposed to be able to download it from but i’m not clear on which file to pick. there are long lists of files all of which appear to be files i need but none of them seem to be a large enough file for an OS. Is there any site that will simply let me download an ISO and burn it to disk?

I am looking to install Linux on my laptop (Dell Inspiron E1705). During installation I was asked if I wanted to install it under Windows or as a stand alone. I have partitioned my hard drive so the installation as a standalone is no problem, but this is my first time attempting to work with Linux. .

Are there any other issues I might have to face, and if so what is the best way to deal with them???

I had XP on the computer since i got it, then i downloaded Ubuntu. I want to delete the linux with corrupting the hard drive or ruining XP in any way.
