How to batch repair file and folder names encoding on windows after a windows->linux file transfer?

How do I begin game programming?
Is it required to know windows programming before one can begin game programming with DirectX?
I’ve seen some code written for Windows-based applications, and it is very different from what I’ve learned in C++ textbooks. I guess windows programming itself is very different from console applications.
Anyway, I want to get up to speed with DirectX, but I am not familiar with windows programming. Do I need to learn windows programming before I can even attempt to work with DirectX?
can GNU license javascript be used on commercial websites with out cost?
I am not sure when scripts from www.extjs.com or www.dhtmlx.com and other scripts that are license under GNU can be used on commercial websites, which have no plans to sell the website, just to use the scripts, in order to make their website look better.
My understanding of GNU license scripts is that they are free to use, and considering you can view source from a web browser, i guess any javascript license under the GNU is free for use ?
is this correct ?
What is the difference between a programmer and a software engineer?
Or is there one? I was led to ask this because of a joke I read:
It has been said that physicists stand on one another’s shoulders. If this is the case, then programmers stand on one another’s toes, and software engineers dig each other’s graves.
…and I didn’t get the joke. So I guess what I’d really like is an explanation of the punchline of this joke, which seems to rely on understanding the difference between programmers and software engineers.
What is the best route to take with finding a programming language that suites game development ?
I understand that there are lots of this questions already posted, but I am in need for a serious answer.
I started out with Game Maker back in 2004, and feel that it DOES produce the results I like, but I do feel extremely limited, as I like to program, but also have an artistic vision for my games. I also feel embarrassed that I am working with such a cheap means of programming.
I guess to continue with my answer, that my question that has come up in numerous ways, is that what programming language is the best towards producing games. And no, it doesn’t have to be "easy to learn" (although it should be possible to grasp rudimentary concepts and such) I own C++ without fear by Brian Overland, Game programming all in one third edition by Johnathan S. Harbour, and Beginning game programming by Jonathon Harbour.
Reinstating the question again, as I have only been working with 2d games and haven’t made the leap towards 3d.
What is the best programming language for computer games?

How to implement a library bar code system?
I’ve been assigned to implement a completely new library information system utilizing bar coding for books, and in accordance to the Dewey decimal system. I guess the easy part is the database along with the GUI. But I have no clue where to start after that. Would bar code scanners be able to recognize ISBN bar codes, or should we opt to printing our own bar codes?
How do I adjust screen resolution of GNU/Debian Linux in text mode?
Hi I’m running my Linux under VirtualBox and the screen doesn’t want to get bigger its something like 640×480 and if I put in in full screen mode (VB) it still stays same. I guess there needs to be something adjusted in Linux right. I have experiences with X but no X just plain text mode. Thx
