I’m trying to help a visually impaired friend of mine find software that can convert text to speech. A lot of textbooks do not have audio versions and reading is extremely difficult. However, as a student, this person does not have a lot of money. Any help would be appreciated. I would prefer you actually know or use the program and know it works great instead of just posting random google links.

…What I mean is a software that will alow me to make compositions of piano notes and the software can translate it into music (MIDI format will do) give me a website where I can download the files and give me a freeware or a open source product (the one with GNU Free Software License)

I am interested in software that helps libraries setup a cataloging and searching system for online, electronic database resources.

So far I have come across these freeware +/- open source possibilities: Alfresco, Knowledge tree, OpenKM, SCAN, Nuxeo, Greenstone, Xinco.

Any other good ones I have missed?

I’m looking for something free (permanent freeware, not a trial period), and with the ease of use of a Commodo or a McAffee (not much manual port configuration). Commodo free doesn’t seem to be available for Linux.
Any suggestions?

Similar to how SUN distributes OpenOffice which competes with Microsoft’s Office suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)… oh, for Linux first choice, or for Windows, thanks!

I have just written a program. Now I want to make it free to all and open source. I want to allow others to edit it, but I don’t want to someone else to steal the name. I don’t have any money for copyright, so that’s out of the question.
