Where and how can I find some good computer programming and science classes?

I am in the Navy and will be shipping off to boot camp soon. After that, it’s off to Navy Nuclear Power School. I would like to take some computer programming classes during my off time if possible. I’ve always loved PC gaming but could never actually understand the scripting in gaming mods let alone actually create my own mods. Also, on a more serious note, much of what I will use later in my career will be very computer heavy, so I would like to have a good understanding of computer languages.

What is the difference between computer science and computer programming?

Somebody please explain this in terms I can understand.

I want to do something in computers when I grow up. I like programming but would like to know more.

What is the different between a computer scientist and computer programmer? Don’t they overlap in certain ways?

How start programming in an open source project?

I have a bachelor’s in Computer Science but have not used my programming knowledge/experience in the last couple of years. I want to re-sharpen my skills and think participating in some open source projects would help and be very interesting; but I really don’t know where to start.

– do I just find a project I want to help with? (where do I find one)
– is there a community for each project that I need to present myself to?
– if there is a project I’d like to help with, where do I begin?
– where can I help smaller projects and warm up?

I hope you get the gist of this question, any guidance would be GREATLY appreciated.

thanks,
-Nico

What programming languages should I learn as a High School Student?

I am a High School Junior, will be a senior is 1 day, and I am wondering which programming languages I should get acquainted with before entering college. I am planning on going into computer science & informatics and going into the security side of things. I have been told that I don’t really need to learn any but I’d still like to be ahead a little going in. I have already taken a class on VB and am currently working on some MySQL & C++. What else should I look into?

How can I get experience in programming?

I have just graduated with the BS in Computer Science from Troy University. I currently work at a helpdesk making good money and I don’t really want to leave this position. However, I do want to eventually jump into programming and I would like to know the best way to get experience.

I have heard that internships are a great way to accomplish this but where would I find one?

Where can I start learning and practicing game programming?

I’m on my second year of Computer Science. I know Java, C, UNIX system programming, SQL, XML. I’ve figured that C++ is the most used language for game programming.

So where can I start? Should I join one of those game modding teams? Should I take one of those free online courses?

Thanks in advance!

What is the best and fastest way to learn a computer programming job?

I heard C++ was outdated and lands you very few jobs. I do not have a college degree in computer science but i am willing to spend a lot of time to learn and i am happy with any programming job that pays at least 35k. If any one could help me and lead me in the right direction that would be great.

I really like programming and I just took AP AB Computer Science at my school, and I’ll have to wait till college if I want more formal education so some recommended books (preferably in Java) to help me continue where I left off would be awesome!
