This question has been on my mind all summer long. As I prepare for class in the fall I have been searching the interw3bs for a new laptop. This reason for wanting one is I have been using a eMac running Fedora 8-12 and I love it, but I think it is time to move on to something more portable. My three biggest concerns with buying a new notebook are in this order

Functionality (Programs "just work". and Program compatibility)(GPU, CPU,ect.)
Battery Life (7 hours or better —–> would be nice if i can get that performance on GNU?Linux)
Aesthetics (Oooooooo Shiny)

I am going to college to become an engineer. I don’t know which field of engineering but I know I want to build a better future for my home town and small villages in the 3rd world. The software I use now is all open source but don’t know if I can get away with using it in a college environment where AutoDesk and Adobe are king.

I don’t mind Apple’s closed system when it comes to iTunes and all that I have ways around that. But, they are showing great interest in F/OSS. Even if I run Windows ( another closed system) i still have to pay for the software. Might as well go closed source with open source benefits.

I mean programs like Audacity, Itunes, Adobe production products, Microsoft Office products, Skype, etc. I DON’T mean games. So, what programming language/languages are used to make these specific-use application software?

My tablet pen will only make straight lines in Photoshop. It works in fine in Painter X .
Using Vista 64, Nvidia graphics card GNU enabled. Any ideas? Adobe was no help.

How many lines of code does it take to create something like microsoft word or Adobe dreamweaver or programs like that.
Also roughly how many lines of code does it take to create something like limewire(peer-2-peer prog).

What is the main programming language for software programs like from ADOBE or MICROSOFT or just small applications?

Just like the title says. I just started using Mozilla FireFox for my internet since I couldn’t seem to download Adobe like I used to. I’ve downloaded lots of videos from youtube before but can’t seem to now that I’ve gotten FireFox. Can you help?

Both Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Flash have this functionality, but I need to know an open source method so my friend can do it on her computer.

I have been getting into flash a bit for the web and need a proffessional tool that I can use prefferably open source. If not, what are good programs for this ather than adobe’s?
