Most companies embrace open source because they understand that no one source is an expert on anything so they provide support for open source products. Open source allows experts through out the world to contribute to projects which should lead to better software. GNU is an open source project and a good place to start to learn more about open source.
Open source is commonly attached to operating systems like Linux. Open source lets you or anyone for that matter make changes and alterations to the operating system as they please. Theres no copyright infrigement laws to be broken when something is open source.

"Open source" is a less restrictive control method in software development.
Typical commercial computer software is "closed source," meaning you’re never going to see the actual code behind the program (AKA "source code"). It’s proprietary, and if the source code is release to the public, the company will lose money because they can’t control their product and others can change it.
"Open source" means that you CAN access the source code. It is freely available, and you are typically allowed to change and redistribute it freely. (See the particular license of a program for the specifics.) As such, "open source" programs are typically free of cost, whereas "closed source" software typically costs money, though there are exceptions to both.
There is no implication that "open source" software is better or worse than "closed source" software, though many will often argue the benefits of "open source" software.
